Greetings from Hiroshima!
The weather is getting colder (shout-out to my boy Toto Washlet with heated seat and water jets) but I believe this is preferable to the heat in Pretoria right now. If we just split the difference, I believe everyone would be happier.
I have finally had the opportunity to play Shōgi (similar to chess, but more complicated) in Japan. The score currently stands at 3-1 to South Africa, but one of those games was a learning experience, so I’m not sure that it counts. I also played a game of chess and lost quite spectacularly. But I won’t mention that (even though I just did).
Hiroshima is a very beautiful city. I walked to the Peace Memorial Park the other day, but quickly became overwhelmed and had to leave. It’s crazy to think that hundreds of thousands of innocent people were killed in a matter of minutes, and the dome that still stands there is a very powerful image. I will go back next week when I return to Hiroshima (taking a very scenic route across Japan this time), and try to keep it together.
I saw a sign outside a bar the other night that said “No children. Cash only.” and I have decided this is my new years (and lifetime) resolution #squadgoals.
There is a very nice Nepalese restaurant here that has some vegan options, so I’ve mostly been eating curry. My top tip when ordering curry is to ask for super spicy because the tastes are tailored toward the Japanese population, and heat is not really a thing here.
I still need to edit some of the photos I’ve taken, and will do so when I stop procrastinating. I’ll attach some that I took on my phone until then.
For now, that’s about all I have to say.
Wishing you well,
